Here's my draft for Day One of
getyourwordsout 's 7 Days, 7 Stories challenge. It's a prompt fill for
genprompt_bingo, prompt (chosen for my Wild Card slot) "kishotenketsu", which is a Japanese storytelling concept known as "plot without conflict."
The story is an MCU fanfic, featuring Vision being taken clothes shopping (so between Age of Ultron and Civil War).
Vision is more befuddled than anything when Sam and Colonel Rhodes approach him in the residential wing corridor one sunny Saturday and shove a bundle of clothes into his arms. He looks at the clothes a moment, then back up at them. “What’s all this about?”
“Listen, Vision…” Rhodes begins.
“What do you do to relax, man?” Sam asks. “ ‘Cause you’re suited up all the time, and we were just wondering if you maybe wanted something else to wear.”
Vision blinks at them, then replies slowly, “I enjoy reading, and meditation has helped me unwind after our training sessions… but I think I understand what you mean.” He gestures with the bundle of clothes. “I take it I’m meant to put these on? Are we going out, then?”
Sam nods, and Rhodes says, “Yeah. Everything’s on Tony’s dime, so we might as well make use of it. Meet us in the garage when you’re ready, all right?”
“Very well.” He inclines his head to them by way of farewell, then walks to the door of his quarters and steps directly through it.
Out in the hall, he hears Sam say, “Man, I’m never gonna get used to that.”
After a brief argument on the drive into town, Sam pulls the car into the local Target. They make their way to the men’s department, followed by the stares of the other shoppers. Vision is used to this by now; the team’s been on several missions in the three months since Sokovia. He carefully ignores the crowd that forms nearby, and instead focuses on picking out clothing with Sam and Rhodes’ help.
The dressing room attendant gapes when they walk up laden with around a dozen articles of clothing—t-shirts and jeans, button-ups and slacks. “Uh… you’re only allowed six items per changing room. Uh. Sirs.”
“I apologize,” Vision says. “Is it all right if I take a few in and then come back for the rest?”
“They all for you?”
He smiles gently. “I’m afraid so.”
“Just—just take ‘em all.” She laughs nervously. “It’s not like my boss is gonna throw out the Avengers.”
“Thank you very much.” He takes the rest of the clothes from Sam and Rhodes, and enters the changing cubicle the attendant indicates for him.
Natasha catches Wanda staring at all the food again. She leaves their nearly-full grocery cart behind her and approaches the younger girl quietly. “You okay?”
Wanda blinks, blushes, and shakes her head. “It’s—nothing. I am fine.” She glances back at the shelves full of bread. “There’s just… so much.”
“It is a bit of a culture shock,” Natasha agrees. She smiles at Wanda, who cautiously smiles back. “I was the same way for a while, back when I first got into SHIELD. You’ll get used to it.”
“I hope so.”
“Anyway, I think we are good on food for the next week, unless there’s something you wanna get?” Natasha enjoyed taking Wanda along on grocery runs, in large part because she’d been boldly trying things she’d never heard of or had access to in Sokovia.
But Wanda shakes her head. “No, I’m fine.”
“Then let’s get out of here.”
Natasha gathers up the cart and the pair of them set off for the registers.
Sam is finalizing the purchase of Vision’s new clothes when someone enters the register queue behind them. Vision turns just on reflex, and is surprised to see Natasha and Wanda there, with a cart of groceries. Wanda blushes and looks away from him, but Natasha is smiling. “Are those Steve’s pants you’re wearing?” she asks.
“I’m not sure—”
“They are,” Sam replies, putting the Avengers-branded credit card Tony had given them back in his wallet. “Probably not the best choice, but I had to work with what was in the laundry.”
Natasha’s smirk widens into a grin. “I see.” She begins unloading their cart onto the belt. Vision, for want of anything to say or do, steps over and helps.
“Where is Captain Rogers today?” he asks conversationally.
“Too busy to come help with groceries,” Natasha replies. “I think he’s with the computer geeks, scouting for our next mission. He said we had the day off, but you know him.”
“It’s a bit of a foreign concept,” Sam says with a chuckle. “All seriousness though, he needs a break sometimes.”
Natasha sets a jug of milk on the belt firmly. “Tell you what,” she says. “Why don’t you kids go to the cafe and get a drink or a pretzel or something, and once I’ve paid for all this, we can head home and drag Steve away from his work for a bit.”
Sam grins. “Sounds good.” He steps away from the register with Rhodes, who is carrying all of the shopping bags, and they head towards the small cafe at the front of the store. Vision helps Natasha and Wanda unload the rest of the cart, then follows the others with Wanda on his heels.
Soon enough, they’re all loaded up in their respective vehicles, with a little switching around. Colonel Rhodes elects to join Natasha, while Wanda takes the front seat with Sam and Vision. They chat amiably the whole drive back to the compound.
Vision cannot remember having a nicer day.
