Since a couple people were asking in comments, tonight's entry will be about the short story I'm working on, which is, for the moment, titled "The Death and Life of Caroline Carver."
The germ of the story idea sprouted when I was exposed to the television show Pushing Daisies and one of its inspirations, the French film Amelie, very close to each other. I became enamored of their use of narrators and the precise narrative style they both possessed. I decided I wanted to write a story using a similar style of narrative, and perhaps a similar element of magical realism and heightened reality. I was in my early years at college at the time, and I wrote a 2k story about a young woman who is hit by a car and dies, but gets to decide in something like purgatory whether or not she wants to go on living.
That's pretty much how's it's been for the last several years. I actually submitted the story to a contest in university and made it to the finalists, which was cool. But I haven't done much with the story since.
I was trying to write a new story and failing when I hit upon Caroline's story again. I decided a rewrite was in order, not least because I had written a new version of the second pivotal scene (the one in purgatory) and wanted to incorporate it. I decided to expand the narrative to include a couple of characters instrumental in Caroline's death as well. It's going all right so far, though my motivation seems to be in the toilet these days.
If I can get off my butt and work on it, I will hopefully have a finished draft by the end of the month. I will try to share snippets with you via writing reports when I can.
Anyway, that's all from me tonight. I'm tired and I've got a headache, so I'm probably off to bed.
